Mary has captured the beauty of the face of an African child in her quilt, and in this poster of the quilt. Reds, greens and browns combine with Mary's block printing and design on this quilt poster, measuring 24 inches by 36 inches. Mary so powerfully shares her experiences in Africa with us in her art work. She speaks about her encounter with this young girl: When I first saw her- her eyes squinting against the wind-driven dust of the African plains, her face tiny against the sweeping landscape, full of innocence and wonder and AIDS- I could barely raise my camera to take her photo. I wanted simply to stare at her, to memorize her face. Back home in my studio, I began to draw what I had photographed. Then I printed what I had drawn. I colored the prints, I plated the prints, and finally I put them to rest in a quilt. And still, away from the studio, far from the world of safety and art, I close my eyes and see her haunting face.
