"She's a Teacher" has fabric printed with hand-painted wood cuts and linocuts on cotton. Photographs come from Mary Fisher's personal collection. Yellows, oranges, and bright blues remind one of the tribal colors of Africa. Hand and machine quilting and embellishment accent the face of this woman. Completed size is 39 1/2" wide by 48" high. Sleeve on the back makes hanging easy. The "Faces from my Heart" Collection was first shown in Houston in 2009 at the International Quilt Festival. This quilt bears the face on a woman photographed by Mary Fisher in Africa. The colors are bold and tribal making this quilt particularly powerful. The artist statement is as follows: Dehumanized by so many forces - being born African, and black, and poor, and especially being born female - she could have given up before she began. Instead, she pursued an education, and in the process proved tougher than thugs who rape and merchants who steal from those who have no power. Today, she is her village's role model, a woman who embodies what she teaches: dignity and wisdom.
