"She's a Widow" bears the photo-transferred face of a widow from Africa. The reds and forest greens are block printed from wood-cuts and linocuts created by Mary Fisher. This quilt is 39 1/4" wide by 44 3/4" high. The lower right hand corner also has an embellished figured machine quilted and created by Mary Fisher. This quilt is part of the "Faces from my Heart" Collection, first shown in Houston at the International Quilt Festival in 2009. The fabric in this quilt is uniquely created by Mary Fisher with woodcuts, linocuts and fabric paints. Tribal colors of deep greens and bold reds are accented with trim and beads. The artist statement is as follows: Death takes so much from us. When my sons and I stood at their father's grave, tossing pebbles on the freshly-turned earth, I knew a sense of loss that was chilling and final. But other widows, like this one, suffer more. When her husband died she was thrown to the wolves of poverty. Soon, she will not be a widow any more. Because, given all the options, she will choose to follow her husband, and she will die.
