"She's a Lady" is part of the "Faces from my Heart" Collection, first shown in Houston in 2009 at the International Quilt Festival. The colors are subtle and include grays, pinks, salmons, and a touch of blue. The photo-transferred face is accented with a bead trim. The upper left hand corner bears an embellishment in wool which is representative of the women of Africa and is repeated frequently in Mary's artwork. This quilt contains fabric printed with wood-cuts and lino-cuts. The colors are soft and muted with a touch of bright blue in the border. Embellishments and machine quilting finish off this piece in the unique style of Mary Fisher. The artist statement is as follows: Raised as a proper young woman, I would hear my mother say, "Mary, be a lady." It meant I should stop being a tomboy and watch my manners. It spoke to an image of reserved femininity that contradicted Playboy centerfolds. Well into adulthood, I met this woman: Proper in every way, modest in style and speech, humble, kind with a sense of herself that makes her powerful. Truly, she's a lady.
