This quilt has rich reddish browns, golds, some purple and greens. The fabric is cotton and is embellished with wood-cuts and lino-cuts by Mary Fisher. The face of an African child is photo-transferred as the focal point of this quilt. Finished dimensions are 39" wide by 46 1/2" high with a sleeve attached on the back for easy hanging. The warm hues on this quilt surround the face of an African child photographed by Mary Fisher. The face is bordered with a beaded trim. The artist statement is as follows: Once she was an infant, and then a toddler. But childhood eluded her. She wakes in the morning to be a parent: to search for wood while carrying her little brother, beg for money or food to feed her dying sister, try again to keep alive what little hope there is for her family. Only technically is she a "child." And only if we care will she, and millions like her, ever know what childhood could mean.
